MARATHON AND MEDICINE
WORLDS SUMMIT CONFERENCE IN BARCELONA sponsored by
The High Performance Sport Centre (CAR) in San Cugat (Barcelona) hosted the last 6th May the IMMDA meeting (International Marathon Medical Director’s Association). The medical directors of the main world marathons, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, London, Rotterdam, Rio de Janeiro, Stockholm, Cape Town and also Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Palma de Mallorca y Oviedo, were present.
The aim was to review the guidelines on liquid’s intake, before, during and after physical exhaustion competitions. The conclusions included a broad spread of topics as liquid intake rate during a long term run (i.e. “Drink following your durst feeling”) until ideas and recommendations to calculate the required amount of liquid.
A member of the meeting, Tamara Hew of Tim Noakes’ group of South Africa, commented Maughan’s work, which recommend a post competition drink with a sodium concentration up to 1,2-1,5 g/l.
Recently, at the CAR, ran a study with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, which compared Recuperat-ion with another commercial drink. Recuperat-ion, which has that sodium concentration recommended by Maughan, showed better results on hydration and energetic muscle recuperation.
